Description
In 1985, Anthony Red Rose, an up-and-coming dancehall singer, found himself in King Tubby’s studio. It was his first time there, and he had accompanied a colleague to record dubplates.
By chance, King Tubby himself heard Red Rose belting out a song called “Tempo”. The dubmaster recognized its potential and urged Red Rose to officially voice it.
The song’s lyrics were inspired by the sounds and rhythms of dancehall events. Red Rose had been singing it around various sound systems, but he hadn’t initially planned to record it as a single.
Without hesitation, King Tubby sprang into action. He gathered his musicians and crew, creating a beat for “Tempo” right then and there.
Red Rose stepped up to the mic, and the song was recorded in one take. The bass line, menacing and swinging, perfectly captured the essence of Kingston’s gritty neighborhoods.
Tubby’s prediction came true: “Tempo” became an instant anthem, sought after by sound systems worldwide.
