Description

Callie Weed” by Heptones Expression is a timeless classic that has left an indelible mark on reggae music. The emotive voice driving “Callie Weed” belongs to Jackie Bernard, a member of the renowned group Kingstonians. His performance captures the essence of the song, drawing listeners in with its rhythmic embrace. But Bernard is not alone on this musical journey; he is accompanied by two talented friends, Telford “Tilly” Nelson and Leroy Sibbles.

Behind the scenes, the instrumental accompaniment is provided by the Soul Syndicate band. Their musical prowess enhances the emotional impact of the song, making it resonate with audiences of all generations.

Telford Nelson, the creative force behind “Callie Weed,” auditioned the song on his guitar for producer Harry J in 1975. Recognizing its potential, Harry J sought to further elevate the track. He reached out to Leroy Sibbles, whose vocal talent would complement the existing elements. The result? A dynamic blend of voices and musical nuances that define the song’s character.

Interestingly, the record was initially attributed to the mysterious entity known as Heptones Expression, perhaps as a marketing strategy. However, the truth comes to light: it was Telford Nelson’s composition from the start. Leroy Sibbles, as the sole Heptone involved in the recording, subtly contributed background vocals, allowing Nelson’s harmonies and Jackie Bernard’s leadership to shine.

On the Dub side, Telford’s vocals stand out, isolated in the mix. This deliberate choice highlights his distinctive presence, emphasizing the multifaceted nature of the song.
